BFA in Animation



Description

Animation is an interdisciplinary degree offered by the College of Fine Arts and Communications through the cooperative involvement of the Department of Theatre and Media Arts, the Department of Visual Arts, and the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology’s School of Technology. The animation major covers everything from traditional cell animation to 3-D animation and composting. Once you are accepted into the major you will meet with your assigned faculty mentor to plan and approve your electives. Built into the curriculum are recommended 2-D and 3-D emphasis recommendations, but you may take any electives reviewed and approved by your faculty mentor.

Admission Requirements

This is a limited enrollment program.  To be admitted you will first need to be admitted to the university and then meet additional program-specific acceptance requirements.
  1. Declare Pre-Animation as your major (See the Advisement Center, D-444 HFAC or call (801) 422-3777)
  2. Complete TMA 102 and VAAnm 160
  3. Submit an application to the major

Application Requirements

  1. Letter of intent:  briefly introduce yourself (no more than one paragraph).  BYU education goals, entry-level career goals, and long-range career goals.
  2. Final project from VAAnm 160
  3. Sketch book
  4. Figure drawings (5-10)
  5. Five story ideas written in five sentences or less (no more than one page total, typed).  Demonstrating a breadth of ideas is better than two similar ideas.
  6. A list of the top 10 books, movies, television, paintings, or illustrations read/viewed within six months prior to application.  Explain why they were read/viewed and what was most valued about each (no more than one page total, typed).

Career Information

Animation majors are prepared to work in various disciplines that include feature animation studios, visual and special effect studios, entertainment, computer games, and scientific data visualization.  For more information visit the Career and Learning Information Center in 2590 WSC.

Program Accomplishments / Awards

Since its formation in 2001, the BYU Animation program has won five student Emmys (officially known as College Television Awards) from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation.  These computer animated films include "Noggin", "Turtles" and most recently, for Las Piñatas.

"Turtles" also won a bronze medal at the 33rd Annual Student Academy Awards.

"The quality and complexity of BYU's 3-D computer animated short films attract the attention of major motin picture studios and video game companies eager to hire artists who are 'both sides of the brain,'" said R. Brent Adams, professor of industrial design.  Seniors who worked on "Noggin" have landed at Pixar, Sony Pictures and Digital Domain.
